BIOGRAPHY

Maximilian Haberstock (2004) is a nineteen-year-old conductor, pianist and composer. He is currently obtaining his musical education at the University of Music & Performing Arts Munich, where his teachers include Prof. Thomas Böckheler (piano) and Prof. Kay Westermann (composition). He is studying conducting with Prof. Georg Christoph Sandmann (Dresden).

The first prize winner of the German national music competition is no stranger to the stage, whether the Philharmonic Hall in Munich or the Carnegie Hall in New York. In 2017 he performed with Lang Lang for the German President at Schloss Bellevue in Berlin.

For the last four years Haberstock regularly played in chamber music ensembles together with renowned musicians such as Daniel Müller-Schott, David Fray and Alban Gerhardt, at the Stars & Rising Stars Festival in Munich, where he also had a chance to present his latest compositions.

In 2018 Maximilian Haberstock was chosen as  Student-in-Residence in piano at the Verbier Festival, and has been invited back in 2019 as a Junior Conducting Fellow into the Mentorship Program of Valery Gergiev. He returned to Verbier in the summer of 2021 as James Gaffigan’s conducting assistant with the Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra.

Since then Haberstock participated in conducting masterclasses with Prof. Johannes Schlaefli, Maestro Michel Tabachnik as well as Prof. Rüdiger Bohn with orchestras such as Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra and Leipzig Symphony Orchestra at Gewandhaus.

In 2023, he has been accepted to the prestigious Gstaad Conducting Academy as the youngest participant in the history of the festival.

In November 2022, he conducted the Craiova "Oltenia" Philharmonic Orchestra in a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Following the resounding success of this concert, and at the special request of the orchestra, Haberstock has been appointed Principal Guest Conductor for the seasons 2023/24 and 2024/25, during which he will conduct the Oltenia Philharmonic in six concerts.

Haberstock made his opera conducting debut with Bizet’s Les Pêcheurs de Perles at Opera Română Craiova in April 2023 which led to an invitation from Opera Plovdiv, where he will conduct Bizet’s Carmen in November 2023, Verdi’s La Traviata in December 2023 and will work directly with the general music director Dian Tchobanov in other productions throughout the season.

In December 2019, Maximilian Haberstock took the stage for the first time as the conductor of his newly founded ensemble the “Arcis Chamber Orchestra”. Subsequently, he performed together with his orchestra in two concerts, with all the proceeds going to his charity project. For their third concert in May 2023 Haberstock and his orchestra, now expanded to 52 musicians from over 20 nations and renamed the “Young Philharmonic Orchestra Munich”, performed with the acclaimed cellist Alban Gerhardt in Munich.

Maximilian Haberstock and his sister Ayla Sophie are the founders of the non-profit project “Young Musicians Live”. They are proud to be able to send seventy-five refugee children to school with the money they raised in their concerts for the benefit of Zeltschule e.V. (“Tent School”).

He was the youngest speaker at TEDxYouth@München 2019; he received a standing ovation for his talk: “Finding Stories in Classical Music”

Haberstock is a scholar of the “Young Musicians on World Stages” foundation, created and mentored by Güher & Süher Pekinel. He is also a recipient of the “Carl-Heinz Illies-Grant” as well as the “Gerd Bucerius-Grant“ of the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben.

Maximilian Haberstock (2004) ist ein 19-jähriger Dirigent, Pianist und Komponist. Er studiert Klavier bei Prof. Thomas Böckheler an der Hochschule für Musik & Theater München und Dirigieren bei Prof. Georg Christoph Sandmann (Dresden).

Der mehrfache Träger erster Preise im Fach Klavier trat bislang nicht nur in der New Yorker Carnegie Hall, sondern auch gemeinsam mit Lang Lang im Schloss Bellevue auf Einladung des Bundespräsidenten Frank-Walter Steinmeier auf.

In den vergangenen vier Jahren stand Haberstock regelmäßig in Kammermusikensembles mit renommierten Musikern wie Daniel Müller-Schott, David Fray und Alban Gerhardt beim Stars & Rising Stars Festival auf der Bühne. Darüber hinaus hatte er die Gelegenheit, dem Festivalpublikum seine neuesten eigenen Kompositionen zu präsentieren.

2018 wurde Maximilian Haberstock als Student-in-Residence für das Fach Klavier zur Teilnahme am Verbier Festival ausgewählt und im folgenden Jahr erneut dorthin eingeladen, dieses Mal als Junior Conducting Fellow. Im Sommer 2021 nahm Maximilian ein weiteres Mal am Verbier Festival teil, nun als Assistent von James Gaffigan, Generalmusikdirektor des Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra.

Meisterklassen im Fach Dirigieren besuchte Haberstock seither bei Prof. Johannes Schlaefli, Maestro Michel Tabachnik sowie Prof. Rüdiger Bohn; dabei arbeitete er mit Ensembles wie dem Litauischen Staatlichen Symphonieorchester und dem Leipziger Symphonieorchester am Gewandhaus zusammen.

Im Sommer 2023 wurde er in die Gstaad Conducting Academy als bisher jüngster Teilnehmer in der Geschichte des Festivals aufgenommen.

Im November 2022 dirigierte er das Oltenische Philharmonische Orchester Craiova in einer Aufführung der 9. Symphonie Beethovens. Aufgrund des durchschlagenden Erfolgs dieses Konzerts und auf besonderen Wunsch des Orchesters wurde er für die Saisons 2023/24 und 2024/25 zum Ersten Gastdirigenten ernannt.

Sein Debüt als Operndirigent gab Haberstock im April 2023 mit Bizets Les Pêcheurs de Perles an der Opera Română Craiova, was zu einer Einladung der Opera Plovdiv für die Spielzeit 2023/24 führte. Dort wird er im November 2023 Bizets Carmen, im December 2023 Verdis La Traviata dirigieren und bei weiteren Produktionen während der Spielzeit direkt mit Generalmusikdirektor Dian Tchobanov zusammenarbeiten.

Mit seinem eigenen, neu ins Leben gerufenen Ensemble, dem „Arcis-Kammerorchester“, stand Maximilian Haberstock erstmals im Dezember 2019, ein weiteres Mal im November 2020 am Pult. Die Erlöse aus den beiden Konzerten kamen in vollem Umfang seinem Wohltätigkeitsprojekt zu Gute. Für ein drittes Konzert im Mai 2023 traten Haberstock und sein Orchester, inzwischen 52 Musiker umfassend und in „Junges Philharmonisches Orchester München“ umbenannt, mit dem renomierten Cellisten Alban Gerhardt in München auf.

Im 2017 Jahr gründete Maximilian Haberstock mit seiner Schwester Ayla Sophie das Non-Profit-Projekt „Young Musicians Live“. Die Gruppe ist stolz, mit dem Erlös aus ihren bisherigen Konzerten für den „Zeltschule e.V.“ 75 Flüchtlingskindern ein Jahr Schulbesuch ermöglicht zu haben.

Als jüngster Teilnehmer bei TEDxYouth@München 2019 wurde der Nachwuchsdirigent für seinen Vortrag „Finding Stories in Classical Music“ mit stehendem Applaus belohnt.

Haberstock ist Stipendiat der von Güher & Süher Pekinel ins Leben gerufenen und betreuten Stiftung „Junge Musiker auf Weltbühnen”.  Darüber hinaus wurde er mit dem „Carl-Heinz Illies-Förderstipendium“ und dem „Gerd Bucerius-Stipendium der Deutschen Stiftung Musikleben“ ausgezeichnet.
